Mobilization Fee

Business

Definition

A mobilization fee is the charge for transporting hydrovac equipment, personnel, and supporting materials from the contractor's base of operations to the designated job site.

Mobilization fees account for the significant cost of moving heavy hydrovac equipment to a work site. A full-size hydrovac truck weighs 60,000 to 80,000 pounds when loaded, consumes substantial fuel, and requires a CDL-licensed operator for transport. The mobilization fee covers fuel, travel time, equipment wear, and the opportunity cost of having the unit in transit rather than producing revenue.

Mobilization fees vary based on distance, equipment size, and local market conditions. A typical mobilization fee for a hydrovac truck might range from $500 for a local job to $2,500 or more for a distant site. Some contractors include mobilization in their hourly rate for nearby work but charge it separately for distant locations. Understanding mobilization costs is important for project budgeting, especially when multiple mobilizations are needed for phased work.

Clients can minimize mobilization costs by consolidating multiple hydrovac tasks into a single mobilization, scheduling work in geographic clusters, and planning ahead to avoid emergency callouts that carry premium mobilization charges. Some large-volume clients negotiate reduced or waived mobilization fees as part of master service agreements.
