Hourly billing is the most common pricing structure in the hydrovac industry because the time required for excavation varies significantly based on soil conditions, depth, utility density, access constraints, and disposal requirements. A typical hourly rate for a full-size hydrovac truck with operator ranges from $250 to $450 per hour depending on the market, equipment size, and project requirements.

The hourly rate typically includes the hydrovac truck, vacuum and water systems, a trained operator, standard hand tools, and basic personal protective equipment. Additional charges may apply for extra crew members, water resupply, disposal fees, travel time beyond a specified radius, and after-hours or emergency work. Some contractors offer a minimum charge, typically two to four hours, to cover mobilization and setup time.

When comparing hourly rates between contractors, clients should examine what is included and excluded from the quoted rate. A lower hourly rate that excludes water, disposal, and travel may end up costing more than a higher all-inclusive rate. Requesting a detailed rate sheet that itemizes all charges helps ensure accurate cost comparisons and prevents unexpected invoicing.
