Hydrovac Truck

Equipment

Definition

A hydrovac truck is a specialized vehicle equipped with a pressurized water system and an industrial vacuum system, purpose-built for non-destructive hydro excavation of soil near underground utilities.

A hydrovac truck integrates several key systems onto a heavy-duty truck chassis: a water tank (typically 400 to 1,200 gallons), a debris tank (typically 6 to 15 cubic yards), a water heating system (boiler), a high-pressure water pump, a vacuum blower or fan, a boom or hose reel system, and the associated plumbing, controls, and safety systems. The entire package typically weighs 50,000 to 70,000 pounds when fully loaded.

Hydrovac trucks are manufactured by companies such as Vactor, GapVax, Super Products, Foremost, Tornado Global Hydrovacs, and others. Units range from compact models designed for urban work to large tri-axle units built for heavy production excavation. Key differentiators between models include debris tank capacity, water tank capacity, blower type and size, pump output, and boom reach.

Operators should hold a commercial driver's license (CDL) to operate a hydrovac truck on public roads, as most units exceed the 26,000-pound GVWR threshold. Many hydrovac companies also require operators to complete manufacturer-specific training and hold certifications in confined space entry, traffic control, and first aid.
