Boiler

Equipment

Definition

The boiler on a hydrovac truck is an onboard water heating system that raises the temperature of the pressurized water supply, enabling excavation in frozen ground and improving digging efficiency in cold weather conditions.

Hydrovac boilers are typically diesel-fired or natural gas-fired units capable of heating water to temperatures between 140 and 200 degrees Fahrenheit. The heated water is essential for operations in cold climates, where frozen ground cannot be effectively excavated with cold water alone. The boiler also prevents the water system from freezing during winter operations.

Boiler capacity is measured in BTU output and directly affects how quickly the unit can heat water and maintain temperature during continuous operation. Common boiler sizes range from 200,000 to 800,000 BTU per hour. Larger boilers can heat water faster and maintain higher temperatures during sustained digging, but they consume more fuel and add weight and cost to the truck.

Boiler maintenance is critical for reliable cold-weather operation. Regular descaling, burner inspection, and thermostat calibration are required to maintain heating efficiency. Water quality affects boiler longevity, as hard water causes mineral buildup that reduces heat transfer efficiency and can eventually block water passages. Many operators use water softeners or treatment additives to extend boiler life.
