Hose Reel
EquipmentDefinition
A hose reel is a mechanical spool mounted on a hydrovac truck that stores, deploys, and retracts the vacuum hose or water hose, enabling the operator to extend the working reach of the truck for remote digging applications.
Hose reels on hydrovac trucks come in two types: vacuum hose reels and water hose reels. Vacuum hose reels carry the large-diameter vacuum hose (typically 4 to 8 inches in diameter) used for remote digging when the boom cannot reach the excavation point. Water hose reels carry the smaller-diameter high-pressure water hose that connects to the wand and nozzle.
The vacuum hose reel is the more critical component for remote dig operations. It allows the operator to pull out the length of vacuum hose needed to reach the dig site, sometimes 200 feet or more, and then retract it when the work is complete. Powered hose reels use hydraulic motors to assist with winding the heavy hose back onto the spool, reducing operator fatigue.
Hose reels must be properly maintained to prevent kinking, crushing, or tangling of the hoses. The vacuum hose in particular is subject to wear from the abrasive slurry passing through it and must be inspected regularly for holes, cracks, and worn spots that can cause suction loss. Couplings and connections at the hose reel must be airtight to maintain vacuum efficiency.
