Rotary Nozzle

Equipment

Definition

A rotary nozzle spins a concentrated water jet in a circular pattern, combining the cutting power of a straight jet with broader area coverage for efficient soil removal in hydrovac excavation.

Rotary nozzles, also called spinning nozzles or turbo nozzles, use the reaction force of the water jet to spin the nozzle body, creating a conical spray pattern. The spinning action means the concentrated jet contacts any given point on the soil surface only briefly during each rotation, providing more aggressive soil removal than a fan tip while being somewhat gentler than a continuous straight jet.

These nozzles are particularly effective in hard clay, compacted soils, and mixed fill materials where a fan tip nozzle would be too slow. The rotary action helps break up cohesive soil clumps and can penetrate materials that resist a distributed fan spray. However, the concentrated jet pattern means rotary nozzles carry more risk of utility damage than fan tips, and they should be used with caution near known utility locations.

Rotary nozzles require more maintenance than static nozzles because they contain moving parts. The bearing or seal that allows the nozzle to spin is subject to wear from the high-pressure water and abrasive soil particles. Regular inspection and replacement of the spinning components is necessary to maintain proper function.
